Oceania Athletics Association (OAA) is pleased to announce that the 2027 Oceania Cross Country Championships will be held alongside the New Zealand Cross Country Championships at the University of Waikato in Hamilton on Saturday 14 August 2027.
Hosted by Athletics New Zealand, the championships will give all Oceania Member Federations the opportunity to compete for the title of Oceania Champion. The Oceania Championships will be contested in the senior age groups.
OAA Competition Manager Andrew Matthews said the combined event offers athletes a valuable racing opportunity.
“Oceania Athletics is excited to return the Oceania Cross Country Championships to New Zealand, and to work alongside Athletics New Zealand and their National Cross Country Championships,” Matthews said.
“Combining the two events gives our Member Federations’ athletes the chance to race in a deep, competitive field on a genuine cross country course, and we’re looking forward to seeing the region’s best distance runners in Hamilton next year.”
The championships are expected to attract many of Oceania’s top emerging and established athletes, providing an important opportunity to compete at international level as they build towards major championships in 2027 and beyond.
Athletics New Zealand Event Director Libby McGee said the championships would give New Zealand athletes the chance to contest an international title on home soil.
“For many of our athletes, an Oceania title is a major goal, and being able to race for it without the cost and time of travelling overseas is a real opportunity,” McGee said.
“It also gives our clubs, volunteers and the wider Waikato community the chance to be part of an international championship. Volunteers are the backbone of events like this, and we’d encourage anyone keen to be involved to keep an eye out for opportunities next year.”
