The Solomon Islands Athletics Federation has hosted the Oceania Athletics Association for a World Athletics Kids’ Athletics “Train the Trainer” course in Honiara, bringing together 18 coaches from Australia, New Zealand, Norfolk Island, Vanuatu and Tonga.
The three-day course ran at the Solomon Islands Institute of Sport and combined theory, practical training and a close look at how the World Athletics Kids’ Athletics programme works on the ground. The course was facilitated by Albert Miller, a Kids’ Athletics facilitator and a lecturer in the Coaches’ Education and Certification System (CECS) at Levels 1 and 2.

Participants finished the three-day course by putting the theory to work at Burns Creek Adventist Primary School, where they ran a session for students in Grades 3 to 6. It gave the group a chance to apply what they had learned in the classroom setting, in the real-world environment.

World Athletics Kids’ Athletics is one of the largest grassroots development programmes in world sport, with an estimated cumulative audience of more than 13 million children and young people. The programme uses athletics to get children moving, build their skills and confidence, and connect them to the sport for life, wherever they happen to live.
Developed by coaches, teachers and young people around the world, Kids’ Athletics is designed to be fun, engaging and high quality for children aged four to 14.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the OAA for the chance to facilitate the Kids’ Athletics course in Honiara,” Miller said. “We had three great days of learning and interaction among the 18 participants, who all came with their own experience and knowledge. The course was very informative and interactive, with contributions from everyone.
“The highlight was the two-hour session at Burns Creek Primary School, where we had more than 100 students taking part in a range of activities organised by the course participants.”
Congratulations to all participants on completing the Train the Trainer course.
