Oceania Athletics Championships 2024 – Suva, Fiji Islands

The 2024 Oceania Athletics Championships will be conducted in Suva, Fiji, with the Championships to begin on Tuesday June 4th and run until Saturday June 8th.

The National Stadium, HFC Bank Stadium, will be the host venue, and is currently being re-laid with a new track surface to be finished by mid-April 2024.

Suva has previously hosted the 1990 and 2017 Area Championships, 2016 Regional Championships, 2003 South Pacific Games. Fiji was due to host the Regional Championships in 2020, before being cancelled due to the pandemic.

In many ways, Fiji is the hub of the Pacific and with 13 Federations having direct flight access into Fiji, and no Federation needing a Visa, it makes the logistics of the Championships smoother for all. It is hoped this will enable more athletes to attend the Area Championships.

The Area Championships will be conducted in the Senior and Under 18 age categories. The Senior Championships will form a critical part of qualification towards the Paris Olympic Games and future World Athletics Series Events. Whilst the Under 18 Championships, will be the highest level of competition for Under 18 athletes to compete in.

After the successful introduction of the Teams Challenge in 2022, it will be expanded to include the Under 16 and Under 20 Age Groups. With arguably the biggest athletics competition in Oceania in terms of spectator numbers, the Fiji Schools Championships, the Teams Challenge will allow those athletes represent their school on the international stage.

Oceania Athletics President Robin Sapong:

“Its amazing opportunity to return to Fiji for The Oceania Championships in 2024. With the growth of the Championships since the last time it was there, and the opportunities for athletes to cement their qualifying positions for Paris, it will no doubt be a great host. Fiji has a long history in athletics and with the Oceania Athletics Championships. The Teams Challenge, will be exciting for Fiji School teams to test themselves against the best teams in the region.”

The Local Organising Committee has received funding towards the upgrade of the equipment to be used at the Oceania Championships. With Athletics Fiji hosting regular competitions at the National Stadium when not being resurfaced, the technical expertise and volunteer capacity is outstanding.

Albert Miller – Oceania Athletics Council Member and Local Organising Committee Member

“As a senior member of the Athletics fraternity in Fiji and the region for the past 40 plus years. Hearing the area championships are in Fiji is a wonderful opportunity to promote athletics in the islands. Having the Championships in Fiji, the hub of the Pacific, will allow for more athletes the opportunity to come to the Championships.

The Oceania Athletics Association Council is committed to hosting the Oceania Masters Athletics Championships in Suva, Fiji Islands in June 2024 alongside the Oceania Area Championships. Specific Information regarding these Championships will be distributed separately.
