Pat Tiernan has broken the Oceania 10,000m in Los Angeles, USA. Running at the Sound Running event, put on for athletes to try and qualify for the rescheduled Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games.
Pat ran 27:22.55, to take over a second off the record, held by Stewart McSweyn from the Zatopek Classic in 2019, a race which Tiernan lead and ultimately came second to McSweyn.
Tiernan, shared the lead with Ed Cheserek and Eric Jenkins, taking the lead of the race with 1000m to go. He couldn’t shake Jenkins, who would out sprint him down the home straight.
Tiernan, who originally hails from Toowoomba, in Queensland, Australia, moved to the USA for his University studies. He attended Villanova University, where he had a successful NCAA career, highlighted by winning the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
From there he represented Australia in the 2016 Olympic Games and continued to train in Philadelphia under his college coach Marcus O’Sullivan, until a move this year saw Tiernan join Oregon Track Club in Eugene, Oregon and be coached by Olympic medallist Mark Rowland
