The Commonwealth Games have started with a colourful opening ceremony honouring all things Australian. The athletes all had a taste of the buzz of the huge crowd, before they all take to their competition venues. Team Cook Islands were named the best dressed team by the Sydney Morning Herald with OAA intern Patricia Taea, wowing in traditional costume as her country’s flag bearer.
Australia’s track superstar, Sally Pearson was given the honour of delivering the Queen’s baton to HRH Prince Charles.
We are all eagerly awaiting the commencement of the Athletics competition on Sunday at Carrara stadium, when we will be treated to a week of amazing competition. First event to kick off with be the Men’s and Women’s 20km race walk. We have two finals being held in the stadium with the Men’s Hammer Throw and the Men’s 5000m final. We will also be treated to the heats and semis of the Mens and Women’s 100m, along with the heats of the Men’s 400m. Something for everyone, and if you don’t already have tickets you might still be able to purchase seats for your favourite events online.
