Gold for Kelsey-Lee Barber: Final Round Win
Congratulations to Kelsey-Lee Barber on a phenomenal performance at the 2019 IAAF World Athletics Club Championships. Having lengthened her run-up on the advice of coach and husband Mike Barber, the 28-year-old claimed the world title in dramatic style, moving from fourth place to first with the clutch final-round effort of 66.56m.
Barber came into the championships ranked number two in the world this year courtesy of a brilliant season highlighted by a personal best of 67.70m in Lucerne in July. But she looked out of sorts in the qualifying round in Doha on Monday, only scraping through to the 12-woman final in 10th place. Barber settled her nerves on Tuesday night with a solid opening throw of 62.95m, but with one round to go in the final, she had to pull out something special – special she did!
Day 5 Highlights:
Kelsey Lee Barber – 🥇 World Champion Women’s Javelin
Steven Solomon ( 400m – AUS), Lauren Boden, Sarah Carli (400mH – AUS) advance to their respective Semi-Finals
Brandon Starc (HJ – AUS) qualifies for the Mens High Jump Final
Day 6 Highlights:
Decathlon: C Dubler (AUS) finishing day 1 with a total of 4135 points
Shot Put Q: Maddison-Lee Wesche made her IAAF World Championship debut in the women’s shot put. The U20 World Champion with a personal best of 18.32m, threw 17.22m to finish 25th overall.
1500m Heats: G Griffith, L Hall, J Hull (AUS) all progress to the Semi-Final.
5000m Heats: Camille Buscomb (NZL) took full advantage of her invitation to the event from the IAAF, setting a huge PB of 15:02.19 with a powerful final lap to place 5th in her heat and automatically qualify for the 5000m final.
Shot Put Men’s Final: NZ Ready to Rumble
Day 9 IAAF Doha 2019 World Championships, and the men’s shot put final looms as a titanic battle. Tom Walsh led the qualifiers, with fellow New Zealander, Jacko Gill, qualifying in 7th. Eight men have topped 22 metres this year; six are in the final. It should be a close battle and not one to be missed. Tune in and get behind Athletics New Zealand!
The Last Pacific Island Competitor in action
Adrine Monagi (PNG), competed in the women’s 100m Hurdles Heats at IAAF Doha. Adrine made her World Championships Debut with a time of 14.00, finishing 7th. Reigning World Champion and fellow former Oceania Athlete, Sally Pearson, took the time out to assist Adrine with her final preparations – a fantastic opportunity that adrine truely appreciated. Matt Lynch caught up with Adrine post race for an interview.
Bronze for Walsh: An Historic Shot Put Final
A momentous night of Athletics on Day 9 in Doha, highlighted by the greatest men’s shot put competition in history. The competition produced three of the seven longest throws ever as one centimetre separated all three medallists.
The 2017 champion Tom Walsh was seemingly on his way to victory after surpassing the championship record of 22.36m set earlier in the first round by Ryan Crouser as the New Zealander smashed out the longest put for 29 years of 22.90m. Yet in an incredible final round, 2015 world champion Joe Kovacs launched to the lead with a throw of 22.91m – a 34-centimetre improvement on his PB to take a one-centimetre lead. In one final twist, Crouser, who was sat in bronze, elevated himself to silver with a 22.90m effort, exactly matching Walsh’s mark but relegating the New Zealander to bronze by a superior second-best mark.
Congratulations to Tom Walsh on the Bronze Medal and New Oceania Area Record.
Fellow teammate, Jacko Gill finished the competition in 7th, with a best throw of 21.45m, just 2cm off his PB. It was the third consecutive World Championships shot put final Tom and Jacko have competed in together.
