French Polynesia Building Towards Home Pacific Games

French Polynesia will arrive in Darwin with a young and developing squad, continuing to build towards hosting the Pacific Games in Tahiti in 2027.

The team carries momentum from a strong showing at the Polynesian Championships earlier this year and will use the Oceania Athletics Championships as another step in their progression on the regional stage.

High jumper Teanavai Perez leads the team after claiming the Under 20 title at the Polynesian Championships in Auckland. The national Under 20 record holder heads into Darwin in good form and will be looking to build on that result.

“I’m really proud to represent French Polynesia at the Oceania Championships,” Perez said.

“My goal is to give my absolute best, stay focused on my performances, and carry the colours of PYF with pride on the track.”

In the sprint hurdles, Kiara Gilroy joins the team following a strong run of performances. The 2025 Pacific Mini Games champion has been competing through the indoor season and arrives ready to carry that form into competition.

“It’s truly always a privilege to compete under our flag,” Gilroy said.

“I feel really lucky and proud to represent home alongside such talented young athletes. It’s our last big championship as we head toward the Tahiti 2027 Pacific Games, we’re ready.”

Amy Valet, who finished second in the 100m at the Polynesian Championships, will line up in both the 100m and 200m, while distance runner Amandine Matera comes in off the back of a strong domestic season, including double titles over 5000m and 5km in 2026.

A number of emerging athletes will also get their opportunity, with Under 18 competitors Carlyne Combette, Kyara Garbutt, Hinavai Janicaud and Melvyn Cella all earning selection after strong performances earlier in the year.

With a focus on development and exposure at international level, the championships in Darwin form an important step for French Polynesia as they continue to build towards a home Games in 2027.
