The Solomon Islands has achieved a historic milestone as Athletics Solomons is named a finalist for the Member Federation of the Year award at the World Athletics Awards 2024, to be held in Monaco. The recognition celebrates a remarkable year for the nation, marked by on and off-track achievements and significant strides in inclusivity and community engagement.
Athletics Solomons President Michael Kuali “Few days ago was full of excitement and more of just wondering how we have managed to earn such a recognition. It’s a milestone achievement that our federation is really proud of. To cut things short, it all comes back to our collective commitments and hard work that we have shown in moving athletics forward in the country.”

The Solomon Islands’ success for the 2024 season began with its hosting of the XVII Pacific Games in November 2023. The largest sporting event ever held in the nation brought together 400 elite athletes from 20 countries and territories. Capitalising on the home ground advantage, Team Solomon Islands broke numerous national records in front of the packed out home crowd at the National Stadium in Honiara. The Games not only highlighted the country’s sporting excellence but also fostered national unity and pride, inspiring increased youth participation in athletics.

Continuing the streak of record-breaking performances, Jovita Arunia set a new National Record in the 60m sprint at the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow, while Dianah Matekali broke the Half Marathon National Record at the Ballarat Marathon.

Athletics Solomon Islands made significant strides in promoting inclusivity through its partnership with Oceania Athletics in the Sport Inclusion Australia Program. This initiative has been instrumental in engaging individuals with disabilities in athletics, fostering a culture of respect and inclusivity within the community. Delivered across Honiara, Central Province, and Malaita, the program has raised awareness about the importance of accessibility in sports though the vehicle of athletics.
The Kids’ Athletics Program has further advanced inclusivity and physical well-being among children. With an emphasis on equal opportunities for children with disabilities, the program has seen growing participation from schools and communities. Beyond promoting physical health, the program has helped children develop essential social and leadership skills, while building confidence and resilience.

To support the development of local athletes in the lead up ot the Athletics Solomons National Championships, Athletics Solomons conducted the Oceania Basic Accreditation System for Coaches course. Designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of coaches, the course covered key areas such as planning, conducting, and reviewing effective training sessions. The newly accredited coaches are now equipped to contribute positively to their communities, strengthening the country’s sports infrastructure and fostering a culture of learning and excellence.
The achievements of 2024 reflect a fantastic year for Athletics Solomons, with excellence on and off the track and with a focus on community engagement. By prioritizing inclusivity, youth development, and professional training, the federation has not only elevated the profile of athletics in the Solomon Islands but has also laid a strong foundation for future success.
