Masters Athletes Lead the Way on Day One of the Oceania Cup
The Oceania Cup and Masters Championships began in Nuku’alofa with the Masters athletes producing the first set of results at Teufaiva Stadium.
In the hammer throw events, Lester Laughton won the Men’s Masters Hammer with a throw of 29.74m. Tina Ryan of New Zealand finished first in the Women’s 60+ Hammer with 27.66m. Althea Mackie won the Women’s 30 to 59 Hammer.
Local support was strong for the invitational shot put. Penisimani Ta’e’iloa took the Men’s Invitational Shot Put with a best throw of 18.30m. Munaloto Waikato Molitika won the Women’s Invitational Shot Put, giving Tonga two wins across the event.
Australia recorded victories in both the Men’s and Women’s Masters 300m Finals. Dash Newington of Great Britain and Northern Ireland won the Masters 400m Hurdles.
There were also strong performances from developing athletes. Hinavai Janicaud set a French Polynesian under 16 record in the Invitational 400m Hurdles, finishing in 1:04.72. Mo’unga Leao of Tonga won the Men’s Invitational 400m Hurdles to close out the day on the track.
Day two introduces the Senior Oceania Cup events along with the Para programme, beginning at 11.00am local time.
