The most wonderful time of the year! NMI National Meet and Night of 5s Recap
The penultimate weekend of the year and there is no slowing down!
Northern Mariana Islands
NMI Nationals Track and Field Meet saw Saipan has the hub of activity on Saturday. Open and Masters Athletes took part in the one day event.
100m Open was won by NMI representative Theo Rodgers 11.47 with Simon Tang and Tony Camacho in the minor places. Tang and Camacho repeating this effort in the 200m placing behind Caleb Cui.
In the Women’s Throwing events Maria Igitol wins the Women’s Javelin Kina Rangamar placing 2nd after winning the Women’s Discus.
The Masters show no slowing down with athletes spanning the 30-55 age groups. Joel Phair was dominate on the track in the M45 age group winning the 100m, 200m, and 1500m. Greg Borja showed versatility taking out the M50 200m and Long Jump events.
Team Northern Mariana Islands will continue their preparations for the Mini Pacific Games and Oceania Cup, and Oceania Masters Cup in 2025.
New Zealand
Night of 5s was an action-packed night of athletics in Auckland
Zoe Hobbs doubles the distance, taking on the 200m crossing in 23.50 to open her season followed by heptathlete Briana Stephenson in 24.38.
In the field Olivia McTaggart soared to a new short approach PB of 4.53m in the Pole Vault. James Steyn clearing 5.23m in the Men’s Competition for the win. Oceania Hammer Champion Anthony Nobilo throwing 67.68 to lead the throwing events.
The main event of the night, the 5000s did not disappoint. In the Women’s event the Laura Nagel asserted dominance going back-to-back in a time of 16:19.87. The North Habour Bays product was joined by teammate Anneke Arlidge for 2nd, Eva Pringle of Whippets Running Project Rounding out the podium places.
Likewise in the Men’s event Julian Oakley returned in 2024 to take out the Blincoe Cup in 13:48.34. The current National Champion was joined on the podium by William Little Whippets Running Project and Toby Gaulter Olympic Harrier and Athletic.
