Australia’s strength in middle distances continues to shine with podium finishes in the Men’s and Women’s 3000m on Day 2 of the World Athletics Indoor Championships.
Australia
Nanjing – China Jessica Hull ran boldly leading the race at many time points, crossing the line in 8:38.28 behind, Ethiopia’s Freweyni Hailu and USA’s Shelby Houlihan. Taking home the bronze medal the first for Australia on Day 2 and the first medal for Australia in the 3000m. Teammate Linden Hall crossed the line 9th in a time of 8:44.99.
The Bronze medals kept rolling with Ky Robinson, the Oceania Record Holder following Jess Hull’s lead by taking control of some of the tactical race to be positioned for 3rd in a time of 7:47.09.
On field Kurtis Marschall, flew over 5.80 for fifth in the Men’s Pole Vault final. Attempts at 5.90 and 5.95 were unsuccessful as the fight for the medals were on!
Torrie Lewis, the Australian Record Holder earned Automatic Qualification for the 60m Semi-Finals finishing 12th overall in 7.23. Teammate Ella Connolly the Area 100m Champion, ran 7.43 in the Heats for 4th.
New Zealand
Zoe Hobbs made her second Majors Final by qualifying for the Women’s 60m Final. In the finals all athletes crossed within 0.1, Zoe finishing 6th in 7.13. Consistently progressing through the rounds, Zoe won the Heat in 7.18, and 3rd in a tight semi-Final in 7.12.
Earlier in the day Imogen Ayris and Olivia McTaggart placed 9th and 11th in the Women’s Pole Vault Final both clearing 4.45m
Day 3 lays ahead with reigning World Champion Nicola Olyslagers (AUS) taking on the High Jump
