Athletics Fiji and Oceania Athletics are pleased to announce the Oceania Invite will be upgraded to bronze status on the Continental Tour.
The World Athletics Continental Tour is an annual series of one day track and field athletic competitions, recognised by World Athletics. The Tour was first formed in 2020, and the Oceania Invitational will be first time a Continental Tour Meeting will be held in a Pacific Island Federation.
The Oceania Invite is a part of Oceania Athletics Strategic Plan, to be able to take Continental Tour Meetings to the Pacific. With Continental Tour Meets held in Australia and New Zealand, the OAA Council has seen the importance to have a meet within the Pacific for athletes and officials access to International One Day Competition.
The Local Organising Committee, Athletics Fiji, and the supporters of athletics within the country, have made it possible to upgrade the meet to Bronze.
Robin Sapong-Eugenio – President Oceania Athletics.
“A Continental Tour Bronze Meeting be held in a Pacific Island Member Federation is a significant achievement for not only Fiji but the wider Oceania Region. The Continental Tour is designed to help athletes earn prizemoney and also ranking points toward Olympic and World Championships Qualification. We cant wait to be in Suva in June to see some of our Area’s best athletes competing.”
The Tour divided into three levels – Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Challenger. The Gold meetings are organised globally, with investment from World Athletics, and area associations are responsible for managing the Silver and Bronze and challenger level competitions.
With the Oceania Invite taking place days before the Oceania Athletics Championships, it will allow for athletes to not gain access to significant ranking points, it will allow them an opportunity to compete on the newly resurfaced National Stadium.
