Oceania athletes open strong on Day 1 in Kujawy Pomorze at World Athletics Indoor Championships

Day one of the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Kujawy Pomorze is underway, with Oceania athletes stepping onto the global stage with a mix of experience and debutants. A silver medal and National Indoor Records and Progressions to the next rounds.

Australia’s Nicola Olyslagers led the way, clearing her way to a silver medal in the women’s high jump with a jump of 1.99m. Sharing the second step of the podium, with Serbias Angelina Topic and Ukraine’s Yulia Levchenko. Competing with clean sheet across the rounds, she added another global medal to her record and opened Oceania’s field event account for the championships.

On the track, New Zealand saw two national indoor records fall. Tiaan Whelpton ran 6.58 to break the New Zealand Indoor 60 metres, continuing his form in sprints in 2026. Lex Revell-Lewis broke the New Zealand Indoor 400 metres Record on debut running 47.17.

Australia’s middle distance group moved through their opening rounds. Jessica Hull and Adam Spencer both progressed to the 1500 metres final, positioning themselves well ahead of the next stage of competition. Over 800 metres, Peter Bol and Hayley Kitching advanced to the semi finals for Australia, joined by New Zealand’s Alison Andrews-Paul, who also moved through the heats.

Pacific Island Athletes, made their mark. Pais Wisil was the fastest of the Pacifc Island Athletes, running 6.66 in 32nd overall, Raihau Maiau 6.86 in a Season’s Best, and Simon Tang rounded out the field in 7.62 in a Personal Best.

With finals beginning to take shape and records already falling, Oceania’s athletes have made a steady start in Poland.

Day two begins at 10:05am local time, 7:05pm AEST, 8:05pm AEDT and 10:05am NZDT.
