Over the recent Independence weekend, Athletics Papua New Guinea (PNG) conducted the Oceania Basic Accreditation System (OBAS) and Oceania Technical Officials Scheme (OTOS) courses in Lae, Morobe Province. These programs aimed to upskill individuals for coaching and technical officiating roles, with a focus on participants from rural and school settings.

The courses attracted participants from various regions, including the Highlands and Momase provinces, such as Simbu Province, Eastern Highlands Province, Madang Province, Finschhafen District, and Central Lae. Participants came from diverse backgrounds including lecturers at the National Sports Institute, volunteers working with people with a disability, school teachers, and volunteers in the community.

The OBAS course, which took place from September 14th to 16th, was facilitated by Mr. Bernard Manau and had 14 participants. Meanwhile, the OTOS course welcomed 16 participants and was led by Mr. Philip Kamane, from the National Sports Institute. OTOS Lead facilitator Philip Kamane “I look forward for another opportunity in the near future to facilitate training for the development of Athletics in the community.”

Participants from across Papua New Guinea attended the sessions, reflecting the nationwide effort to enhance coaching and officiating standards in athletics. Completing both courses saw participants awarded a certificate from the Oceania Athletics Association.

The course facilitators would like to thank Athletics PNG for funding the training event.
