Bruce McAvaney – World Athletics Veteran Pin

At the 2025 World Athletics Congress Bruce McAvaney was awarded the World Athletics Veteran Pin

The World Athletics Veteran pin is an honour bestowed on individual whose exceptional, loyal and outstanding service and contribution has provided a measurable benefit to the sport of athletics over an extended period of time.

Since 1983, Bruce McAvaney has been the “voice” of televised athletics in Australia and often throughout the Oceania region. From time to time and more often in recent times as his professional commitments have allowed, Bruce has also been a stadium announcer – including at the World Cross Country Championships in Bathurst (2023), the Oceania Athletics Championships in Suva (2024) and many World Athletics Continental Tour Meets. When he does offer to assist with stadium announcing, he always does so on the basis that he is assisting and mentoring the volunteers working in the booth whether they be long term volunteers of aspiring young professionals.

Bruce was one of those who worked hardest to deliver the region’s first WACT Gold Meeting including its presence from 2025 on free-to-air television.

Bruce is one of the globe’s professional commentators on athletics. The depth of his research for every competition, whatever the level, is legendary – using every opportunity he gets to meet an athlete or coach to engage with them about their journey in the sport.

His first foray into athletics commentary came in 1983 when the network he then worked for televised Australian Athletics’ first engagement with mass participation road running – a then bold experiment to mix the Australian marathon championships with a 4500+ people’s event starting in North Sydney before a crossing of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the forerunner of the Sydney Marathon which is now part of the World Marathon Majors. Later in 1983 Bruce commentated on the telecast of the first World Athletics Championships.
But it was his work on the 1984 Olympics where he truly established himself as a leading commentator – setting in train 40+ years of superb work which has drawn many to follow athletics particular at international level.

Behind the scenes, Bruce has developed close relationships with some of athletics greatest stars – past, present and emerging and when requested is always willing to provide support that they may seek or even if they don’t request, may need.

He is also an active member of the selection panels for inductions into the Australian Sporting Hall of Fame and its South Australian state-based equivalent. In 2002, the Australian Government recognised his service to sports broadcasting, and to the community through charitable and sporting organisations with the Medal of the Order of Australia.

Over 42 years to date Bruce McAvaney’s presentation of athletics to the viewer, listener or stadium fan has been quite “special”- which is appropriate given it is the term he gives to an exceptional performance or achievement.

We congratulate Bruce McAvaney on their World Athletics Veteran Pin.
