The 2025 Highlands Open Athletics Championships brought together athletes from across Papua New Guinea for an  weekend of competition at the National Sports Institute (NSI) in Goroka. A crucial step in Team PNGs preparations for the Pacific Mini Games

The championships served as the final competitive opportunity for Team PNG athletes who have been undergoing intensive training at the NSI. These athletes were joined by emerging talents from the NSI’s Athlete Development Program (ADP), making the event a strong showcase of both national contenders and the next generation of PNG talent.

Juniors, seniors and para-athletes all competed in a full schedule of events, using the competition to fine-tune performances ahead of the Pacific Mini Games in Palau.

Athletes travelled from multiple regions including Morobe and Lae, bringing more competition to the Highlands Championships.

Athletics competition at the Pacific Mini Games will take place from July 4 to July 9 in Koror, where PNG’s 38-member squad will represent the nation in both Open and para events.
