Estelle Short Set to Make Her World Championships Debut in the 100m

The Cook Islands will proudly be represented on the global stage as Estelle Short makes her debut in the women’s 100 metres at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo (13–21 September 2025).

From an early age, Short was captivated by the thrill of sprinting. “There was something about the adrenaline, the hype, and the atmosphere of competition that drew me in,” she reflected. “Over time, that competitiveness grew into a real passion. Sprinting became not just about racing others, but also about challenging myself to be faster, stronger, and more disciplined.”

For Short, competing in Tokyo is about much more than just her lane assignment. She carries with her the pride of the Cook Islands and the wider Pacific. “Representing my country and the Pacific is about carrying my people, my culture, and my family with me every time I step onto the track,” she said. “It’s about showing the world the strength and talent that comes from the Pacific, and proving that we deserve to be seen on the world stage.”

Short’s path to the Championships has been marked by determination. While training has been intense and rewarding — with a focus on strength, technique, and recovery — she admits the biggest challenge has been balancing athletics with university studies and work. “Those challenges push me to work even harder and appreciate every opportunity,” she explained.

As she prepares to line up against the fastest women in the world, Short is keeping her goals grounded yet ambitious. She hopes to run a personal best, and if that effort brings a Cook Islands national record, it would be a dream outcome. At the same time, she’s excited to compete alongside and watch some of the sport’s greats. “I’m especially looking forward to seeing Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone,” she said. “They’re both incredible athletes, and it will be inspiring to watch them.”

Beyond her own race, Short hopes her journey resonates across the Pacific. Her advice to young athletes in the Pacific : “Believe in yourself, stay disciplined, and never forget your roots. Even if resources are limited, passion, resilience, and dedication can carry you further than you think.”
