Pacific Mini Games Athletics – Day 3 Recap

Records fell and rivalries heated up on a thrilling afternoon of athletics in Palau.

Discus

Australia’s Charlize Goody dominated the Women’s Discus, throwing 49.43m to take gold ahead of Fiji’s Loata Lewageena (48.15m) and Brieanna Rabakewa (45.61m).
In the men’s event, Angus Clues (AUS) led the field with 47.26m, while Wallis and Futuna’s Tapuakitau Lakalaka and Stephen Mailagi secured the minor medals.

Sprint Hurdles

Errol Qaqa (FIJ), the crowd favourite, surged to gold in the Men’s 110m Hurdles with 14.79, ahead of Alex Dunn (AUS) and Maika Pedro (SAM).
Kiara Gilroy (PYF) powered through to win the Women’s 100m Hurdles, with Hazel Wilson (GUM) and Manatu Hafoka (TGA) following.

Para Shot Put

In the Men’s Secured Shot Put, Morea Mararos (PNG) took gold with a 62.20% effort (7.57m, F34). French Polynesia’s Christian Chee Ayee (F56) and Jerome Bunge (F57) were close behind in percentage scoring.

200m Heats

PNG’s Tovetuna Tuna was quickest through the Men’s 200m heats, joined by teammate Waisake Tewa in the final. In the women’s, Isila Apkup (PNG) and Kayedel Smith (AUS) topped the qualifying times.

Javelin (Ambulant)

A duel between Paralympic standouts saw Soane Meissonnier (WAF) triumph with 88.28%, ahead of Ken Kahu (VAN) on 73.08%.

High Jump

Zoe Peacock (AUS) soared to gold in the Women’s High Jump, clearing 1.75m—20cm above the rest. PNG’s Hephzibah Romalus claimed silver, with Olivia Reed (MHL) and Reki Roberts (FIJ) sharing bronze.

5000m

Yeshnil Karan (FIJ) lived up to expectations with a strong win in the Men’s 5000m. Hugh Kent (GUM) and Abel Sinue (PNG) followed.
In the women’s race, Jordan Baden (GUM) held off Natalia Prado Alfonso (NCL) and Tania Tan (NMI) in a tight finish.
Records were broken by Simeon Jacob (FSM), Isaac Oppenheimer (NRU), and Kraven Ngirchomlei (PLW).

400m Finals

Adolf Kauba (PNG) blazed through the men’s final in 48.04, with Daniel Baul (PNG) and Jeremiah N’Godrel (NCL) joining him on the podium.
In the women’s, Heleina Young (FIJ) continued her comeback, clocking 56.05 for gold. PNG’s Kuku and Joy Tieba chased hard for the minor medals.

4x100m Relays Bring Fireworks

Papua New Guinea swept the men’s and women’s 4x100m titles, with the men’s team breaking their national record. Fiji collected silver in both, while French Polynesia (women) and Samoa (men) claimed bronze.
Kiribati broke its national record again—twice in one week!
