It was a busy and energetic Easter weekend for athletics across the Solomon Islands, with activity spanning multiple provinces and bringing communities together through sport.

In Malaita Province, young athletes took part in Kids Athletics activities to mark the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. The day, recognised globally, highlights the role sport plays in building stronger, more connected communities. The sessions in Malaita reflected that spirit, with kids getting active, learning new skills, and enjoying the opportunity to be part of something bigger than just competition.

Central Province also joined in, with children participating in their own IDSDP activities. Across both provinces, the focus was simple. Get moving, have fun, and use athletics as a way to connect.

On the competition side, the 2026 Annual Easter Road Race brought athletes onto the roads for a 5km road race. Wet conditions didn’t deter the field of 20 runners taking part, racing for cash prizes on offer.

In the Senior Boys, Leony Pusua took the win in 16:12.31, ahead of Gee Jay Jr. and Gabriel Kavai.

The Senior Girls race saw Lovelyn Kaba’a lead the way, crossing in 22:38.08, followed by Heptathlete Julian Sosimo and Dorah T.

In the consolation category, Nelson Senisi claimed victory in 18:49.50, with Leeroy Alulu and Absalom Kokoha close behind. Monica rounded out the top finishers.

Across the weekend, the mix of grassroots participation and competitive racing in the Solomon Islands created a hive of activity as they prepare for the months ahead of World Athletics Kid’s Athletics Day, National and International competitions including the Oceania Athletics Championships – Darwin.
