Four National Championships in Oceania for an action-packed weekend

Friday marks the beginning the of an action packed weekend of National Championships across four member federations to kick off the summer of athletics in the Southern hemisphere.

Australia  – 2024 Australian All Schools Athletics Championships

The 2024 Australian All Schools Athletics Championships promises to showcase the next generation of Australian talent from December 6-8 at Brisbane’s Queensland Sport and Athletic Centre (QSAC). Over 1,300 athletes from all states and territories will compete, led by World Under 20 Championships medallists Gout Gout, Izobelle Louison-Roe, Mason McGroder, and Paralympic standout Telaya Blacksmith. Sprint sensation Gout, fresh Oceania Under 20 record and Under 18 best, will take on the 100m and 200m, while Louison-Roe and McGroder bring their world-class jumping talents to the field at QSAC. Paralympian Blacksmith leads the Para-athletes with her record-breaking performances in the T20 category in 2024.

New Zealand – 2024 NZSSAA T&F Championships and Road Race Championships

The NZSSAA Track & Field Championships are  ready to unearth the future of New Zealand’s talent Friday 6th December – Sunday 8th December 2024 at Trust Aoraki Athletics Aorangi Park, Timaru. The Road Race Championships will be held at Caroline Bay, Timaru on Sunday. The event will feature athletes over 1000 athletes from across New Zealand as well as athletes from Cook Islands and Fiji. Weeks after is World best performance over 3000m, Tauranga product Samuel Ruthe will take on the 800m and 1500m. Fellow distance runner and World U20 finalist James McLeay will line up in Senior boys 3000m and 1500m.

Papua New Guinea – Papua New Guinea Athletics Championships

Papua New Guinea Athletics Championships will see the best from the provinces descend on Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby. Papua New Guinean athletes dominated in the Pacific Rankings for 2024 showing the strength within the country. Returning to PNG from his training hub at the Oceania Athletics House Pais Wisil looks to take on an tight field in the Men’s 100m. Pais recently lowering his personal best in Brisbane to 10.50 moving to #3 all time on the PNG rankings. Wisil carrying the family sprinting traditions is also ranked the #1 Pacific Island Athlete over 100m in 2024. The Women’s field sees many international representatives coming to Port Moresby. Edna Boafob, and Harihi Naime began 2024 representing Papua New Guinea as the first Pacific Women to compete in a continental Gold Tour Meeting in the mixed 4x400m, and then again at the Oceania Athletics Championships in Suva. American based athletes will remain in the states to complete their college examinations.

Samoa – Athletics Samoa National Championships

Apia Park hosts the Athletics Samoa Championships from Thursday 5th to Saturday 7th. Athletics Samoa’s talent will be on display as the National Championships is contested across the Open, U20 and U18 age groups, the U14 and U16s will compete by invitation.
Leading into the championships Athletics Samoa has been hosting training sessions to prepare the athletes for the weekend ahead. With strength across the throws and sprints events, the national championships will have some hot fields looking to make their mark leading into the events of 2025.
