Kakiouea Prepares for World Athletics Championships: Insights and Inspiration
Winzar Kakiouea, the Nauru 100m National Record holder and widely recognized as the Fastest Man in Micronesia, is preparing to make his mark in the men’s 100m at the World Athletics Championships.
Kakiouea credits his father as the driving force behind his athletics journey. “He encouraged me to do athletics and sacrificed everything for me. I thank God for the blessing,” he said. His faith and strong mindset have also carried him through challenges, particularly training without access to a track or facilities in Nauru.
“People are surprised when I share where I started. In my country, we did not have track & field, but I was still able to train hard on dry land and aim high. My mindset is strong but my faith in God is even bigger — that’s what keeps me going.”
For Kakiouea, racing against the world’s best is about more than individual achievement. “Representing my country is an honor and a great experience. We are small, and I want to put my country on the map and show the world that we mean something.”
Winzar’s preparations have been going well, based in Brisbane with Coach Travis Venema. “I’m in good shape and healthy. I’m so happy and excited to line up against the world’s elite athletes.”
He also shares advice for young athletes in the Pacific: “You need to have that mindset that you can do it, no matter how hard it is. Just trust, believe that you can make it happen, and have faith in God.”
