Trevor Spittle Retires from Athletics NZ, After A Decade of Remarkable Service

The Oceania Athletics Association congratulates Council Member Trevor on his well-deserved retirement from Athletics New Zealand after nearly a decade of outstanding service as the Technical Officials’ Coordinator. Athletics New Zealand announced Trevor’s retirement however he will continue to serve the sport through his roles with Oceania Athletics.

Over more than 40 years, Trevor has earned a reputation as one of the most respected officials and administrators in New Zealand and Oceania, with his expertise taking him to the pinnacle of global competition – including the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, and multiple World Championships. His journey is a testament to unwavering dedication, influential leadership, and a deep passion for the sport.

A world-class official, serving the sport at every level, Trevor has been appointed to officiate at the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, and multiple World Championships. In 2005, he was named an International Technical Official (ITO). 2013 saw Trevor attain World Para Athletics ITO status. Trevor is now currently one of 12 World Athletics Gold Referees in the Oceania Area.

Trevor has held several leadership roles across New Zealand and Oceania. His leadership roles in New Zealand have included serving as a Board Member and President of Athletics New Zealand in addition, Trevor previously served as Vice President of Oceania Athletics. He continues to play a key role as a member of the Oceania Athletics Association (OAA) Council as well as in his roles as Chair of the OAA Competition Commission and Chair of the OAA Finance and Risk Assessment Committee.

Trevor’s distinguished service has been recognised through the years with the prestigious IAAF Veterans Pin, and the Oceania Athletics Association Merit Award. Trevor is a Life Member of both Athletics Canterbury and Athletics New Zealand.

Trevor will continue to serve the sport through his roles with Oceania Athletics.  Our warmest wishes go to Trevor and his wife, Lynda, for many happy and restful years as they embrace this new chapter beyond the realm of ‘real’ work.
