World Athletics Championships – Athlete Profile: Tovetuna Tuna

Papua New Guinean sprinting talent Tovetuna Tuna is preparing to line up against the world’s best when he takes on the 200m at the World Athletics Championships later this month.

Tuna, the Pacific Mini Games 200m Champion, already holds his nation’s 200m record and has equalled the 100m national record. Now, he has his sights set even higher: the Pacific record of 20.53 seconds, set by Fiji’s Banuve Tabakaucoro.

For Tuna, the journey began close to home. “It was my dad that inspired me to take up track,” he explained. That family spark has grown into a regional spotlight, where he now carries the pride of his country and the Pacific.

“Representing not just my country but the whole Pacific means a lot. I’m carrying my flag and representing my people at a world-class level. It’s a feeling I can’t explain — just a very proud moment.”

Tovetuna (Timmy) preparations  haven’t been without obstacles. Since competing consistently from January, staying sharp has been one of his biggest hurdles.

“The hardest part has been maintaining this form. It’s technically my offseason, but because I got selected for Worlds, I had to get back into training mode. I trust my coach and the program, so I know we’ll be okay.”

Despite the demands, Tuna is focused on consistency, working hard to maintain his fitness and peak again at the right time.

Tuna’s ambitions are clear. “My goal is to attempt the Pacific record in the 200m, and also improve my national record,” he said. Beyond times and records, there’s also excitement about the competition itself.

He hopes to share the track with some of the sport’s biggest stars. “I’m really looking forward to running alongside Noah Lyles and Letsile Tobogo. To watch, I’m excited for Kishane Thompson in the 100m.”

Away from the stopwatch, Tuna sees his role as more than just personal achievement. He’s determined to inspire the next generation of Pacific athletes.

“My advice to young sprinters in the Pacific is just to keep going. If you have that dream and belief in yourself, that’s all you need. Stay consistent, keep training, and keep moving forward.”
