Myers breaks World u20 Mile Short Track Record on Indoor debut
New York, New York, Saturday 25 January. – On his indoor racing debut, Cameron (Cam) Myers holds off a fast-finishing field to win the Dr Sander Scorcher Invitational in a World and Oceania (Area) u20 Mile Short Track Record in 3:53.12*.
Indoor racing presents a new challenge with banked tracks, and more laps, compared to the outdoor counterpart, Myers saying of his first experience running doors “It’s a little different running in a banked track. I did a couple strides before the start, it felt ok. But it took a couple of laps to settle into the rhythm of the bends and the race.
I felt strong and it’s always good to get a win.”
No stranger to re-writing record books as an u20 athlete Cam holds the outdoor 1500, Mile, 3000 and 1000m Area Records. He currently holds the World u18 1500m of 3:33.26 also run on a debut, this time the Diamond League in Poland 2023.
Reflecting on breaking the World u20 Short Track record and the initial reaction:
“To be honest I knew I would be a good chance to get it. The record wasn’t such a difficult one, it surprised me that a junior hadn’t run faster than 3:55. I feel I can run a lot faster than 3:53.12; I’m confident of doing that in the Millrose Games in two weeks.”
The upcoming Milrose Games and New Balance Grand Prix present new opportunities for Myers in the Mile and 3000m. Both meets a part of the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold.
Looking to the future both Myers and Manager James Templeton gave insight into what lies ahead for the Indoor/Short Track Season
“I’m excited to be running 3,000m in the New Balance GP this Sunday in Boston. I felt very comfortable running 3000 in December in Melbourne; I’m looking forward to be running against guys who have run a lot faster. Then 6 days later is the Millrose Games mile. So, it’s two great races and opportunities in the next couple weeks.”
After the stint Indoors, Oceania Track Fans will be able to catch Cam in action against the rising tide of Australian middle distance on home soil.
“At the end of March is the Maurie Plant meet in Melbourne; I’ll be running the mile there the same as last three years. That’s a meet I love. And then Nationals in Perth.”
Looking into the rest of 2025, Cam is aiming to make his Senior Australian Team debut at the World Athletics Championships – Tokyo.
