Team Fiji visits Varsity College

Team Fiji visits Varsity College

In the lead up the Commonwealth Games, Oceania House, has been a hive of activity, with athletes from Cook Islands, Papua New Guinea and Fiji currently all finalising their preparations here. With Vanuatu due to arrive next week as well to finalise their preparations for the Games.

Today saw a group of Fijian athletes head to Varsity College is the closest school to Oceania House and many of the students walk past morning and afternoon, so it was fitting that some of Team Fiji were able to attend the school today.

The athletes Eugene Vollmer, Malakai Kaiwalu, Shawntell Lockington and Elanani Tinani, along with coach Bene, were the special guests at the school’s Athlete Development Program session.  They were introduced to a number of talented sporting students who aspire to represent their individual sports at the highest level.

They all spoke about their backgrounds and their individual events, and Coach was also asked to share an insight on coaching athletes in Fiji.  They answered some questions and all spoke very well, and were great ambassadors for Fiji.

The students were in awe, to meet some of Team Fiji’s Commonwealth Games athletes and now will be cheering on their new friends in their events at the Games.

Team Fiji now turns it attention to its final two meets in Brisbane before the Commonwealth Games.
