Women for a Healthy Community Workshop

Women for a Healthy Community Workshop

Oceania Athletics Association (OAA) held their first Women for a Healthy Community workshop in Lautoka, Fiji over the weekend. The focus of the workshop was education around healthy eating in everyday life and in sport.

The rate of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in Fiji and other Pacific Countries is alarmingly high. Adopting a healthy lifestyle that includes good nutrition and regular exercise will help to improve the rate of occurrence of NCDs. With the support of the Australian Government’s Pacific Sports Partnerships (PSP) Program, OAA delivered a successful pilot workshop. OAA specifically targeted women of Fiji as we realise their potential to create and contribute to the level of health in their communities.

The ladies also enjoyed some physical activity in the form of Zumba and Yoga classes and participated in the very popular cooking class segment. Local produce and in season fruits and vegetables were the highlight of the cooking class. The group were engaged by several new techniques demonstrated by OAA’s resident master chef and Executive Director, Yvonne Mullins. The tables turned when some participants demonstrated a few techniques they use in their kitchens at home.

We wish to thank Tilak High School for the use of their great facilities, Zumba Instructor Litiana Miller, Yoga Instructor Taialofa Petrini and last but not least, the wonderful ladies who participated in the workshop.

OAA sees the potential of delivering these workshops and endeavour to deliver them throughout the Pacific. If anyone has any inquiries about the workshop, please contact OAA’s Project Manager, Carlee Beattie at projects@oceaniaathletics.com
